Dr. G. Sengottuvelu is a senior consultant and interventional cardiologist at Apollo Hospitals, Chennai, renowned for his pioneering contributions to intracoronary imaging and physiology. He has been at the forefront of advanced imaging modalities such as intravascular ultrasound (IVUS) and optical coherence tomography (OCT), initiating the use of IVUS in 2010 and becoming one of the first in India to adopt OCT and fractional flow reserve (FFR) technologies in 2011–12 with systems from St. Jude.

A passionate advocate for innovation in cardiovascular imaging, Dr. Sengottuvelu has actively educated and trained physicians across India and the Asia Pacific region. He is widely regarded as a key opinion leader in intracoronary imaging and physiology, emphasizing their importance in optimizing percutaneous coronary interventions (PCI)—particularly in complex scenarios like left main disease, bifurcations, calcified lesions, and stent failures. His expertise has led him to proctor in multiple hospitals across India and neighboring countries.

Driven by his vision, he co-founded the Imaging and Physiology Council of India (IPCI) in 2015 alongside Dr. Ajit Mullasari. The council initially offered two-day workshops in Chennai on imaging and physiology during 2015–16, which quickly gained popularity and expanded into larger, more structured courses with multiple course directors. His efforts have significantly contributed to improving the understanding and practical use of imaging technologies in interventional cardiology throughout India and the Asia Pacific.

Dr. Sengottuvelu boasts an impressive academic record with numerous publications in prestigious journals. He has trained countless young cardiologists and introduced several advanced technologies to India for the first time, including HD IVUS, DFR (diastolic hyperemia-free ratio), OptiCross IVUS systems, Ilumen 2 OCT system, and Philips IFR OmniCross pressure wire. He has demonstrated these techniques in numerous live cases both in India and internationally.

He was also the principal investigator of the first intracoronary physiology study in Indian patients—the FIND study—which proved the cost-effectiveness of FFR in the Indian healthcare setting. He has since continued to explore non-hyperemic pressure indices such as RFR and DFR, as well as angiography-based QFR. His innovative use of angiographic co-registration with OCT and triregistration with IVUS and IFR has illustrated the clinical benefits of treating diffuse coronary artery disease.

Overall, Dr. G. Sengottuvelu has made remarkable contributions to the growth of intracoronary imaging and physiology in India and remains dedicated to advancing the mission of IPCI by fostering education, research, and innovation in this field
